"An intelligent person is one who learns to swim with the tide, one who does not is a fool. All the progress in this world is due to these fools".
3 idiots revolves around these philosophical lines given to mankind by George Bernard Shaw. I am sure Bernard Shaw was observing someone whom Amir Khan enacts in this picture. He is playing a genius mind who is not accepting the stereotypes of an Established Engineering Institution. Story is modification of a Pink Floyd song to a movie- "Brick in the wall". Institutions are only educating and giving us no knowledge. Institutions discourage inventions and any thing which does not fall in the syllabus. They are factories churning out products (students) who will make no difference.
10/10 for taking this stance and with two thumbs up, highly recommended to experience. You will re-live the time you liked most. Your college days. Music by Shantanu Moitra is amazing and more amazing are the lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.
The risk what Hirani is running into is that he is giving a laathi to all to claim a buffalo. In a country where religion and movies have arguably the same influence, one may not try to encourage anti-establishment motivates specially when the core target audience is students. Hirani has crafted a brilliant niche for his ideas but has over done a little in this one. May be his direction got a little swayed by Amir Khan who is known for it. But then there is no one else who could have done this better or with such finesse.
The movie is "1 idiot". The other 2 (Sharman Joshi and Madhavan) are converted idiots by a father idiot. They accept it gracefully pulling their pants off bending backwards saying "Tohfa Kabul karo". Knowing their acting strengths they have been greatly under-utilised. They could have done much better. I mean Amir Khan coming out of a college 20 years ago is still coming out. Not that Amir is not outstanding, but I am sure there's a talent in other artists to explore, not going far, Sharman could have played this easily.
Boman Irani playing head of the Institute is rougher and tougher, blamed more than required for extremes committed by his students and his own son. Students better not object to the deadlines and decorum which has to be maintained. Sure there will be challenges for students to face when they get out in the real world. Students may not get inspired by this movie and get converted to idiots. For, "all genius are idiots, but all idiots are not genius".
Beautiful Kareena has a very little role to play in treasure hunting (Amir hunting) story. She does well. She is a readymade idiot, waiting for a father idiot to be discovered.
Ragging pranks in the college are normal and probably all of us would have gone through. They are hilarious at times.
"All is well" is well. But not quite well when you will have to deliver a baby pulling out of the pregnant mother through a vacuum cleaner with controlled sucking power with no electricity..
Well, still go for it!

Hey Ritesh,
Very well written. All the people who have seen this movie will agree. But it doesn't offer too much for people who haven't seen it. May be giving it a thumbs up or certain stars will help.
And you are right about calling it just an idiot... was wondering the same myself.
But a very gripping movie... yeah does drag a little at times, especially the delivery scene. i loved the screenplay of the movie. And haven't scene an interval as interesting as this. It literally keeps you on tenterhooks.
:) keep writing
Ah ha.. who says there was no electricity? Did you fail to notice Virus, the inverter that borrows power from car batteries? Well being critical is good, but err, no space for errors pls!!!
